Real Weddings - Elegance in the Tropics (in the middle of the wet season)

When we were initially contacted by the lovely Bec at Dragonfly Weddings and Events about the wedding of Sandra and Chris, I was very hesitant to take it on. It was for early January. So many alarm bells rang in my head… Wet Season, the lack of availability for products due to supplier closures over the Christmas/New Year period, the shear amount of florals required and the need for extra staff and vehicles and cold room hire! OMG it was a lot to consider.

However after chatting with Sandra I realised how relaxed and open she was to being flexible with the florals for her day.

So we proceeded and boy am I so glad we did!

In the lead up to the big day there was torrential rain for a week. I bogged the cold room several times trying to park it near the studio. In the end we couldn’t even park the cars down by the studio. It was so wet!

A few days prior to the Wedding, I was joined by my fantastic florist friends to create all of the epic florals. We worked for days hand crafting every item. All the time I was wondering how we’d get them into the van and down to Port Douglas.

The big day arrived and the rain stopped, for the first time in a week we saw the sun. However it was still too wet to drive the van to the studio. So everything was loaded into the back of the 4x4 Landcruiser and ferried up to the van. There was mud and slop everywhere, but the florals made it without any issues. What a relief.

Now for the fun part… Meeting our beautiful couple and setting up their epic florals.

First up was a large installation at the historic St Mary’s the Sea. Sandra wanted to create a big impact in the church. So we planned to create a large feature around the base of the Altar as I didn’t want to restrict the view out of the large back window. We also placed small posies on each pew end to help lead the eye all the way down the aisle to that amazing Altar piece and out to the beautiful ocean behind.

It was one of the most beautiful items I have created.

Next up, over to the Sheraton Grand Mirage’s Harrison’s Restaurant to set up the table flowers. Here the brief was simply, beautiful flowers everywhere. Each table had alternating centrepieces, bud vases and LED candles. The result was a lush and elegant look. The bridal table was kept very minimal as the backdrop of the pool and the tropical foliage behind did all the hard work for us.

A quick trip back to the church to remove and relocate the church florals to the reception. The large feature was repurposed into features beside the welcome sign and the seating chart. The pew posies were placed around the restaurant to add to the overall brief of flowers everywhere.

The sun shone all day and it was one of the most beautiful days. As our team left from the reception Sandra and Chris celebrated to the rhythm of the drum beats in the bar above. It was just perfect!

Thanks to my amazing team for your hard work on the day.

This epic day would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the following amazing vendors
