So you’ve set the date and booked the venue, now what? You want the most fabulous flowers but haven’t planned anything flowery apart from that pretty Bouquet delivered to your Mum last year…. Well we have put together a few tips to help you navigate your way through.
1. WHEN TO START PLANNING YOUR WEDDING FLOWERS
We highly recommend that once you have confirmed your date, booked your venue and picked
your dress that you should start looking for a Florist to deliver your dream wedding. Leaving this
too late may mean the right Florist is already booked up. By engaging a professional Florist you
can feel confident that they will be able to understand your brief and will deliver it without any
hiccups. By starting this process earlier on you will also have a better understanding of the
budget required to create your dream, as quite often this can be significantly underestimated. So even if is 12 months out from your date, it’s not too early to contact your preferred Florist.
2. HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT FLORIST
Don't just settle on the first Florist that comes across your google search... Take some time and research
Florists on their Websites and Social Media (particularly Instagram as this is probably the best
way to see their actual work). Do you like their Style, does this align with your aesthetic? Are
they a professional Florist and do they have experience in delivering Weddings on a scale similar
to yours? Do you like the sound of what they are saying? If you send them an email how long
does it take them to respond? Once you have found someone you like, ask them questions, do
they have a minimum order value, have they worked at the venue before, can they hire
additional items such as vases, candles and other props? When you're happy they are a fit for
you request a quote or estimate and book in your date. Then nut out all final the details much closer
to the actual Wedding date. They have done this before and will guide you through the process.
3. KNOW YOUR BUDGET
Setting a budget can be difficult and ultimately it will depend on how important flowers are as
part of your Wedding day. Flowers will create an impression for your guests when they arrive
and will set the mood for your entire day. They will also be in every photo of your day and the
mood they set will be remembered long after the day itself.
As a simple rule allow approx 10-15% of your overall Wedding Budget for Flowers.
More info on setting a realistic budget can be found on our Wedding Flowers, what do they cost
blog post.
4. BE REALISTIC AND FLEXIBLE
Be realistic and flexible about your flowers. Have you thought about the climate that your
wedding will take place, will your favourite blooms hold up? Seasonality, are your favourite
blooms even in season? Does your venue allow enough access time for that huge hanging
installation, is there anywhere for it to be hung? Your Florist will be able to suggest
alternatives and come up with something that will be just as fabulous.
Work with the surroundings of your chosen venue/space, not against them. If it’s a modern,
contemporary venue, go contemporary with the flowers. If it’s a rustic, go rustic and wild with
the florals. The same also applies to colours.
5. LEAVE THE DETAILS TO THE PROFESSIONALS
Give your Florist a colour palette and style that you like rather than insisting on particular flowers
or the actual design. This will allow them to create a design that falls within your budget, since
they know how to work around factors such as the time of year and seasonality, both of which
play a key role in the availability, and thus price of certain blooms.
If you have a particular flower that you love, tell your Florist and if possible they will include
this, likewise if you dislike a certain flower, make sure you let them know.
Remember your Florist has done this before and it's their job to plan and design your Floral
styling to deliver the event of your dreams.
