Tips for planning your Wedding Flower budget

Wondering where to start with your Wedding Flower Planning? Well, I think its probably best to think about how much you want to allocate to spending on your wedding day flowers, so setting your floral budget is the first thing you should think about. There are no set rules or percentage breakdowns of total spend to follow and if you haven’t purchased lots of flowers in the past, it can be really difficult to know what they cost. So below is a bit of info that might be helpful for you to figure out what your wedding floral budget is.

Firstly, decide how important flowers are to your final look. Do you want flowers everywhere or do you just want some beautiful, simple pops of colour located in key areas at your ceremony and reception? Start a Pinterest board of pics of the overall style you really like the look of.

Secondly, understanding multiples….. A $5,000 floral budget will look different for different sized weddings, simply due to the multiplication factor. If you require 15 centrepieces your budget won’t stretch as far as if you only required 5.

Third, get a bit of an idea of what flowers cost. We all see those amazing weddings on Insta or TikTok, flower pillars up walls, aisles and walkways lined with flowers, so much amazing stuff. Unfortunately not many of these pics come with pricing so it’s difficult to know what it all costs. I’ll let you in on a little secret, the pics that are popping up in my feed would probably have $100,000 floral budgets! Just next level. So if this isn’t you, you might find it helpful to know that to create the looks you see on my socials and website you will need a budget of around $5000-$7000, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less…. Think about asking your friends or family members to give you an idea of what their floral budgets were, keeping in mind how recent their wedding was and where it was located.

To help you out with this costing research, I’ve got a bit of info below of what items you can expect in a few different price brackets. Obviously, this isn’t an exact science as it does depend on the final look/style and also specifics for each wedding, but it’s a good starting point.

Keeping it simple and elegant- $3000-$4000 - With a budget around this value you can expect bouquets for 3-5, ceremony arrangements such as urns or arrangements on plinths, with a little left for bud vases or 2-3 small arrangements on tables.

Our typical spend $5000-$7000 - with a little larger budget you can focus on making a statement at either your ceremony or reception. If you would like some standard Floral Pillars or an Installation at your reception this is probably the kind of budget you would need. In this price bracket you can expect personal flowers for 3-5, a feature floral arrangement at your ceremony. For the reception, minimal but elegant styling on tables with 8-10 standard table arrangements and bud vases. We would also suggest you relocate your ceremony feature to the reception as an entrance piece or by the cake table or bar.

Over $10,000: If you want flowers everywhere then a budget starting at $10,000-$15,000 will be what you need to think about. This will allow for a floral feature at the ceremony along with more table flowers and feature arrangements at the reception. If you are thinking of grand arrangements and huge installations you might have to bump up that budget to $20,000 or more.

So once you’ve had a think about how many flowers you would like at your wedding and have an idea of your budget, what next….? Well it’s time to contact a florist and discuss all these things with them. It’s no secret that different florist’s will have different pricing and that’s due to many factors, such as experience in the industry, training, the quality of their work, their floral recipes and style, so many things. So find a florist that you feel comfortable with, that creates the work that you love and that runs a business that is professional and reliable. Set a time to have a chat and be open with your budget and what overall look you are wanting for your day. The florist will be able to guide you through all this and also let you know if this will be a suitable budget for what you want and help you make decisions based on what areas are a priority to “flower”.
